Metal Prints vs. Canvas Prints: Which Is Right for Your Photo?
It's the question we hear most at our Snellville studio: "Should I print this on metal or canvas?" Both are excellent — we've printed both since 2000 — but they create very different looks and suit different photos and rooms. As a photographer-owned lab, we care less about selling you the pricier option and more about your photo looking its best on your wall. Here's an honest, side-by-side comparison to help you decide.
The Quick Answer
Choose metal for bright, vivid, modern images you want to pop — travel shots, cityscapes, vibrant color, and contemporary spaces. Choose canvas for a warm, timeless, gallery-art feel — portraits, landscapes, weddings, and traditional rooms. If your photo is high-contrast and colorful, lean metal; if it's soft, personal, or classic, lean canvas.
Print Quality & Look
Metal prints are made by infusing your image into a coated aluminum panel (dye-sublimation). The result is razor-sharp, luminous color with a smooth, glass-like surface — highlights almost glow. Canvas prints are printed on artist canvas with archival inks and stretched over wood bars, giving a soft, matte, textured finish that reads as fine art. Metal shows fine detail slightly better; canvas hides minor imperfections in older or lower-resolution photos.
Durability & Where Each Works
Metal is moisture- and scratch-resistant and wipes clean with a cloth, so it holds up in kitchens, bathrooms, restaurants, and high-traffic spaces. Canvas is best in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices — anywhere you want warmth rather than shine. Both resist fading with our archival process; metal is the more rugged of the two.
Room-by-Room Recommendations
- Living room: large canvas over the sofa for warmth, or a bold metal piece for a modern room.
- Kitchen/bathroom: metal — it laughs off moisture.
- Bedroom: canvas — soft and calming.
- Office/lobby/restaurant: metal for a sleek, professional look that cleans easily.
- Gifts & portraits: canvas, especially with our hand-applied gel brushstroke finish.
Cost & Sizes
Pricing depends on size and finish; as a general guide, metal tends to run a bit higher than canvas at the same size because of the aluminum substrate and process. We print metal up to 24x36 inches and canvas in sizes from small prints up to large gallery pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is more expensive, metal or canvas?
At the same size, metal usually costs a little more than canvas due to the aluminum panel and printing process.
Which lasts longer?
Both are made to last with archival inks. Metal is more durable in humid or high-traffic spots because it resists moisture and scratches.
Which looks better in a bathroom?
Metal — it handles humidity and wipes clean, so it's the safer choice for bathrooms and kitchens.
